Trading Mode Selection
Scheduled Mode (IRP): Full 20-band bidstack dispatch by AEMO. Mandatory for 5MW+ BESS under Integrated Resource Provider rules. Co-optimized energy and FCAS.
Energy Market Bidding
NEM-Style 20-Band Bidstack: 10 bands for charging (consumption) and 10 bands for discharging (generation).
Prices must be ascending within each side. Max charge price must be less than min discharge price to prevent simultaneous dispatch.
📊 Typical NEM Price Ranges:
-$1000 to $0: Oversupply, renewable curtailment - ideal charging opportunity
$0 to $50: Low demand periods (late night/early morning)
$50 to $150: Normal daytime prices
$150 to $300: Peak demand (morning/evening peaks)
$300 to $1000: High demand or supply constraints
$1000+: Extreme events, outages, heatwaves
$15,000: Market price cap (very rare)

📚 How to Trade with BESS in the NEM
🎯 The Basic Concept
You're operating a battery (BESS) that can:
CHARGE - Buy electricity when prices are low (or negative!)
DISCHARGE - Sell electricity when prices are high
HOLD - Do nothing and wait
Your goal: Buy low, sell high, just like trading stocks!
📊 How Bands Work - The Key to Understanding!
Think of bands as "IF-THEN" rules that automatically trigger based on market price:
⚡ CHARGE BANDS (When to Buy)
Each band says: "If the market price is BELOW OR EQUAL to my price, activate my MW capacity"
Band 1: Price = -$1000, MW = 0.5 → Charges 0.5MW when price ≤ -$1000
Band 2: Price = -$500, MW = 0.5 → Charges 0.5MW when price ≤ -$500
Band 5: Price = $0, MW = 0.5 → Charges 0.5MW when price ≤ $0
Multiple bands stack! If price is -$600, both Band 1 and Band 2 activate = 1MW total charging
🔌 DISCHARGE BANDS (When to Sell)
Each band says: "If the market price is ABOVE OR EQUAL to my price, activate my MW capacity"
Band 1: Price = $200, MW = 0.5 → Discharges 0.5MW when price ≥ $200
Band 2: Price = $300, MW = 0.5 → Discharges 0.5MW when price ≥ $300
Band 5: Price = $1000, MW = 0.5 → Discharges 0.5MW when price ≥ $1000
If price hits $350, Bands 1 & 2 both activate = 1MW total discharging
🎮 Real Example Scenario
Current Market Price: $250/MWh
With default settings:
✅ Discharge Band 1 ($200) activates → 0.5MW selling
❌ Discharge Band 2 ($300) doesn't activate (price too low)
❌ No charge bands activate (price too high for charging)
Result: Battery discharges at 0.5MW, earning $250 × 0.5MW × 0.083hr = $10.42 every 5 minutes!
Market Price Drops to: -$100/MWh (negative pricing!)
